Sunscreen Lotion SPF 70

This sunscreen formulation was designed to provide label SPF 70 performance.  SolaStay® S1 and SolaStay® P1 provide very rapid singlet state quenching of Avobenzone, protecting it from photodegradation, and so improve sunscreen performance.  Sensolene® and HallBrite® BHB contribute to UV filter solubility and enhance product feel.  HallStar® GMS Pure and HallStar® PEG 4400 MS provide a base for emulsion formation.  This formulation was subjected to in vitro analysis and delivered SPF ~74 (70), PFA (PPD) ~34 performance with critical wavelength 379 nm.

PREPARATIVE PROCEDURE

1To a secondary vessel add phase A, start mixing and slowly add phase B to phase A with continued mixing.
2Heat phase AB to 85°C and then add phase C ingredients with mixing. Add phase D before combining oil and water phases and mix well.
3To the main vessel add the Water of phase E, start mixing, add the Disodium EDTA, then add the Xanthan Gum, and heat this phase to 80°C.
4When both phases ABCD and E are homogeneous and at their designated temperatures, slowly add phase ABCD to phase E with prop mixing.
5Homogenize for 3 minutes and resume prop mixing.
6Start cooling and when batch is below 50°C, add premix of phase F with mixing. Add phase G with mixing.
7Replace any water lost to evaporation and mix batch until smooth and at desired filling temperature.
